Hi Dr. Berry,
My name is Daniel Gibbs and I am a student at FVCC. I was just wondering if you would be for or against making FVCC a tobacco free campus if you are elected to the board of trustees.
Thank you for you time,
Daniel Gibbs.

Hi Daniel,
First, I am not sure if this is an issue that the trustees control or recommend. But assuming the trustees have a part in the decision, I would recommend the following:
I would not prohibiting smoking on the campus, but I would recommend there be special places for students who wish to smoke. These special places should be convenient, outside main buildings if possible, and not interrupt the students who do not smoke.
As a non-smoker, I do not fully understand a smoker’s needs to smoke. I have some very good friends who smoke. Maybe smoking is as important to a smoker as good reading light is to me. I cannot read under florescent lights for any length of time. I require good natural light or good incandescent light.
Therefore, I will defend a smokers right to smoke on campus just as much as I will defend a student’s right to have good reading light.
Thanks for your question.
Ed Berry
